September 13 is World Sepsis Day, a timely reminder to stay informed about this potentially life-threatening condition.
Sepsis can happen to anyone, but children and older adults are particularly vulnerable. We recently heard of a traumatic case where a young child became seriously unwell after developing sepsis. Thankfully, a trauma insurance policy provided some much-needed financial support during a terrifying time; but not every family is prepared.
Would you know what to look out for? Here are some warning signs of sepsis to keep in mind:
- Fast breathing or difficulty breathing
- Extreme shivering, fever, or feeling very cold
- Slurred speech or confusion
- Not passing urine (in a day)
- Mottled, bluish, or pale skin
- In children: fast breathing, lethargy, vomiting, no appetite, or cold extremities
Sepsis often starts from a minor infection but can escalate quickly. Early recognition and treatment are vital.
Why we’re sharing this: as insurance advisers, we’re here not just to put the cover in place and support you with claims—but to help you prepare for the unexpected.
